Concept

The present book breaks with this standardised procedure. In order to obtain an overview of F&D Cartier’s extensive artistic oeuvre, the material was not edited in the final format as usual, but laid out directly on sheets, thus determining the sequence of the works.
After printing, this sequence was broken up by folding and trimming the sheets, the images were cut, mixed and in many cases literally turned upside down. Through overprinting, references between individual works were created and made visible.
Only now that the bound book is on hand can the resulting sequence of pages and images be experienced: a seemingly random order that questions the autonomy of the works and runs completely counter to the conventional chronology of a catalogue.
